Kidepo, is situated in Karamoja, north-eastern Uganda. It is one of the 10 national parks in the Pearl of Africa, popular for its rugged savannah, bird species, wildlife, sprawling hills with ranges that give some of the best sunsets and sunrises that form a backdrop of breathtaking landscapes that protect diverse wildlife and the most unadulterated cultural heritage among the Karamojong people of northeastern Uganda, bordering South Sudan and Kenya, between Nageya Valley and the hills of Karamoja.
Kidepo has a size of 1,442 square kilometers with an altitude of 914 – 2,749 meters. The park consists of two shallow valley systems, with rugged, dry mountain terrain. In the south-west of the park, is the Narus Valley, bordered by the Napore range to the north-west.
There is also one rainy season which usually begins in April and ends in September. The rains fed the vegetation including Montane forest, grassy plains, open tree savanna, dry thorn bush, thick miombo-like woodlands, Borassus palm forest, and koppies or rocky outcrops.
It is home to a bevy of wildlife, 80 different species call it home, including zebras, large herds of elephants, elands, lesser kudus, dik-diks, buffalos, cheetahs, bright’s gazelle, Oribi, waterbucks, much more.
A birder will chance on several species. Kidepo has more than 450 bird species with the ostriches, kori bustard, Verreaux’s eagle, lammergeyer, and Egyptian vulture being some of the sought-after and recognizable attractions.
